SARDAR MOHSIN AKHTAR ABBASI

Mohsin Abbasi was born near the small town of Murree in Makhra, Rawalpindi. He is the grandson of Sardar Mohammed Abbas Khan, who was the first CSP of independent Pakistan.

Schooling and Early Days

Mr Abbasi completed his early schooling at Presentation Convent School Murree and attended the Pakistan Air Force school in Lower Topa. As a fourteen-year-old, he started his political career as a PML student leader at Degree College Murree, a stronghold of Jamaat-e-Islami. There, he founded the MSF Pakistan and gained control of the institution.

Role of Mr. Abbasi in the Protest Against the Removal of Nawaz Sharif's Government

At sixteen, Mohsin Abbasi was appointed the President of MSF Murree. He led the opposition to the unconstitutional ousting of Mian Nawaz Sharif by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on 18th April 1993, which brought Murree to a standstill. After his arrest during the protests, he was released when the Supreme Court annulled the President's decision, reinstating the National Assembly and Nawaz Sharif.

Exile in Muzaffarabad

Intercession by the Prime Minister of Kashmir, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan, led to Abbasi's exile in Muzaffarabad for two years. During this time, he received political grooming from Prime Minister Sardar Qayyum Khan.

Return to Islamabad

After his return, Abbasi was appointed as the coordinator for student affairs at the PML Public Secretariat in Islamabad, working with Senator Raja Aurangzeb. He strengthened the MSF across Pakistan until the 1999 coup by General Pervez Musharraf.

Role in World Muslim Organisation (WMO)

Abbasi co-founded the WMO with figures like Mahathir Mohamad and Hasan Turabi. His role has been crucial in promoting understanding among Muslim nations. In 2008, he and Dr. Zakir Naik were invited by Raja Ishwaq Sarwar on behalf of Mian Nawaz Sharif to address the PMLN leadership in London.

Aftermath of the Coup

Abbasi being active leader of MSF, organized resistance against the coup and the incarceration of Nawaz Sharif. With leaders like Raja Mohammad Zafarul Haq and Syed Zafar Ali Shah, he actively participated in the protests from Islamabad, with parallel movements in Karachi and Lahore. Also worked alongside the Late Bagum Kulsoom Nawaz during this mass movement.

Life in Britain

Abbasi moved to Britain in 2006 around the same time Nawaz Sharif relocated from Saudi Arabia to plot his return to Pakistan.

Train March Movement and Case

In 1994, Mohsin Abbasi was promoted to Senior Vice President of MSF Punjab. He worked closely with party’s senior leadership, joined forces with Murtaza Bhutto, and played a role in the Train March movement from Karachi to Khyber to protest against Benazir Bhutto's governance. The government charged Abbasi and Nawaz Sharif's staff, including Shakoor Khan (Personal Security Officer), his driver Ashiq, and Shafiq Wani, in the notorious Train March case. Despite being pressured to incriminate Nawaz Sharif, Abbasi remained steadfast.

Work in Britain with International Muslim Organisations and Charities

Abbasi is associated with media channels like Peace TV and Iqra TV and is a founding member of these platforms. His younger brother, Mustasam Abbasi, is also an executive director and trustee. Involved with the Al Khair Foundation, Abbasi contributed to the 2009-2011 flood relief efforts, with his mother and sister-in-law as trustees of the Pakistan chapter. Mr. Abbasi played a key role in organizing the visit of the UK Directors of the Al Khair Foundation, including his younger brother, to Pakistan. This effort was part of a larger plan to expand the charity's work in the region. He facilitated meetings with the Chief Minister, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif, to synchronize charity initiatives.
